Volunteers muck in to clean up village pond
September 11 2006A joint effort between Poppleton Wildlife Trust, Yorventure and the BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) will give an ancient pond a much needed clean-up.
Yorventure is providing a £1,068 grant and BTCV and wildlife volunteers are providing the elbow grease to rid Poppleton Pond of invasive yellow flag and clear debris.
The pond is situated in the old part of the village, close to St Everilda’s Church on land owned by the Parish Council.
Poppleton Wildlife Trust, which is made up of local enthusiasts, has worked hard to restore the pond and surrounding area, carrying out planting to make it an attractive area for local people to use and enjoy.
Pauline Craven, of the Trust, said: “We don’t know the history of the pond. It’s situated near the old cart sheds and restored Tithe Barn.
“It had become overgrown and was in need of a good clear-out so we’re extremely grateful to Yorventure and BTVC volunteers for helping us out.”
The clean-up will took place on September 11th. The trust has timed the clearance work to have minimum impact on wildlife habitats that thrive in and around the pond.
