£10,000 boost for playtime fun at Falsgrave Park

August 08 2006

Scarborough youngsters are whirling with delight after a Yorventure grant paid for new equipment for their play area.

The £10,750 grant is a well-earned reward for the Friends of Falsgrave Park – a group of mums and grandmas who set out five years ago to upgrade the area’s derelict play area.

They have raised their own funds, as well as successfully bidding for grants, to create a play area that local youngsters and visitors to the area can enjoy.

The new equipment was picked by local children and consists of a ‘whirl and twirl’ combination of a giant roundabout, as well as a fireman’s pole.

It has now been installed and is already proving a big hit with local youngsters.

Suzanne Hudson, Community Grants Manager for Yorventure, said: “Falsgrave is one of the most deprived areas in North Yorkshire and the residents there have worked extremely hard to create a people’s park that is open to everyone.

“We were delighted to be able to support their hard work.”

Yorventure is backed by Northallerton based waste management company Yorwaste Ltd, which operates the waste management and recycling centre at Seamer Carr.

The Friends of Falsgrave Park have also received support in the past from the Local Heritage initiative as well as many small local companies.

Kath Hewson, Chairman of the Friends, said: “We all wanted to choose play equipment that most children could enjoy, whatever their physical abilities.

“Falsgrave Park used to be a place that nobody wanted to go to but now we’ve turned it into a real people’s park that everyone wants to come back to.

“We’re especially proud of being the first park in Scarborough to achieve a Green Flag award.”

The Friends already have plans for their next big fund-raising push – to buy an adventure trail and activity fort for the play area.
