Wildlife Habitat Protection Trust – Old Park Plantation
The Old Park Plantation lies within 10 miles of the Yorwaste Harewood Whin landfill site. The Wildlife Habitat Protection Trust was constituted in April 2006 and was gifted a mature unmanaged woodland.
The aim of the Trustees was to open the woodland to the general public, whilst at the same time having the ability to cater for any group who might want to visit – this was to be achieved by for example allowing exclusive use to vulnerable groups. The Trustees consulted widely on the need for the project, which received overwhelming support.

The centre of the woodland was cleared, a wildlife pond created and a viewing area built. Bat and bird boxes were installed throughout the woodland, together with feeding stations.
In order to make the newly created reserve open to everyone there was a need for a fully accessible pathway into the centre of the woodland. Yorventure awarded a grant of £25,000 for the construction of this pathway, which reflects the needs of visitors to the site and complies with DDA requirements. The newly completed pathway will also ensure that visitors follow it, rather than walking over the woodland thus minimising damage to natural flora and fauna.
