The Georgian Theatre Royal

Community Project

The Georgian Theatre project has been one of the most substantial projects that Yorventure has been involved with. Located within 5 miles of the Yorwaste Landfill site at Scorton, the £1.28 million project received a £30,000 through the Yorventure Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.

The project was to restore and improve the historical theatre that dates back to 1788 and has been a major land mark in Richmond for over 200 years. The main aim of the project was to bring the theatre back to its former Georgian glory by restoring the auditorium, back stage and dressing rooms to create a more historically accurate and authentic representation.

The project not only tackled the restoration of the theatre, but has also brought it into the 21st century by means of a new extension. Although modern, the new extension has been designed with incredible sensitivity, allowing it to blend in with and enhance the original 216 year old structure.

The new extension now provides 21st century facilities to a historic iconic building in the heart of this North Yorkshire town with a brand new foyer and entrance, two new bars and of course; disabled access and facilities. The expansive use of glass creates impressive views across the town and towards the dales and is inviting to anyone passing by.

The newly restored auditorium is an accurate representation of how the theatre would have originally been built and furbished. Work on the project was finally completed in August 2003.
