The Esk Pearl Mussel & Salmon Recovery Project

Led by the North Yorkshire Moors National Park this project aimed to halt the decline of Freshwater Pearl Mussel and Salmon populations on the River Esk by improving the river habitat. This was to be achieved by encouraging actions on the ground to reduce sediment input into the River Esk by engaging local land owners.

The work included changes in practical management of the river catchment to reduce siltation, through introduction of a range of measures stock will no longer damage the river banks or reduce the vegetation to such an extent that the soil washes into the river. These measures included fencing, providing drinking water facilities for cattle, planting of new vegetation and improving soil porosity. A demonstration farm was identified to act as an example of best practice by showing the benefits of excluding stock from river banks; different stock watering options; management of bank side vegetation and soil and nutrient management.

Specimens of Freshwater Pearl Mussel have been captured for a breeding programme at the Freshwater Biological Association. Once the river habitat is in a suitable condition, the mussels will be re-introduced. The Environment Agency is co-ordinating this work with the FBA Windermere.

The University of Durham has been recording and analysing water quality geomorphologic information for the river. The aim is to actively involve the community in collecting samples for further analysis by the University. Volunteers are being trained in sampling techniques and also being taught the pearl mussel’s life cycle, monitoring and recording techniques.

Yorventure awarded a grant of £19,996 to the project for costs of fencing, cattle watering systems, gates, clearance of vegetation and expert advice. The Environment Agency awarded £12,500 for a Project Officer (who will monitor and survey the river banks in partnership with the Upper Esk Wildlife Group).
