St Columbas Community Hall
Community ProjectLocated within 5 miles of the Yorwaste landfill site at Seamer Carr, the St Columbas Community Hall in north Scarborough was awarded a grant of £10,000 through the Yorventure Landfill tax Credit Scheme.
Initially when the hall was first built in 1907, it was used as a place of worship, but in 1926 a new church was erected which enabled the St Columbas Hall to become a place for social activities, quickly establishing itself as a focal point for the community.
The impressive stage and projection room encouraged numerous groups to utilise the facilities including a film club and various amateur dramatic groups who adopted the hall for productions ranging from operas to Shakespearean plays. The hall also accommodated various dancing classes, a cub and scout pack, brownies and guides, as well as providing a much needed venue for meetings, functions and one off events.
However, in May 2000 it had become apparent that the decay of the building had started to limit its usage and hence jeopardise the hall’s future as a popular public amenity. It was clearly evident that drastic work needed to be undertaken to secure the long term future of the facility. A committee was elected to establish a feasible restoration project.
The project entailed making repairs to the fabric of the building, providing access and toilet facilities for disabled users, installing a new kitchen and carrying out internal refurbishments throughout the building. The construction of a replacement stage, new dressing rooms and storage facilities were also included in the scheme.
The project was vast, totally over £100,000 and in October 2001 match funding from Yorventure funded the new kitchen as well as the improvements to the hall’s stage area.
