Pickering Theatre

Community Project

Yorventure awarded £12,000 towards the provision of disabled access and an improved heating system for the Kirk Theatre in Pickering, located within 5 miles of the Yorwaste landfill site at Caulklands.

The multi-phased project totalled £73,000 and entailed providing disabled access and toilet facilities, repairing the roof of the theatre building, constructing a wheelchair storage facility, damp proofing the dressing rooms and installing a new and improved heating system.

The project was put forward by the Pickering Musical Society who formed in 1919 as a group dedicated to musical and dramatical performances. Prior to the construction of the theatre, the society performed at the Pickering Memorial Hall, but in 1983 a redundant Methodist chapel was purchased by the society and converted into the Kirk Theatre. It quickly established itself as a focal point for theatrical activity in Pickering, providing a popular public amenity for a vast community expanding from Scarborough to York.

Yorventure were approached in February 2002 to help fund the cost of various improvements necessary to secure the future of the theatre as a well used public facility and to make it accessible to all members of the community. Funding was granted and by the following year work was progressing well. By May 2003 the project was completed. The theatre is now more successful than ever before hosting a variety of sell out shows.
