Hunmanby Skate Aid Skate Park
Community ProjectIn October 2003 the organisation Skate Aid was awarded a Yorventure grant of £10,630 towards a new skate park in Hunmanby, located within 10 miles of the Yorwaste landfill site at Seamer Carr.
Skate Aid is a registered charity that was established to raise funds to create a skate park in the village of Hunmanby that was much sort after by local residents. Prior to the construction of the park, young skaters and BMX riders were forced to use the village hall car park, public pavements and dangerous and unsupervised make-shift ramps. Chris Lintern, community worker at the village hall and youth centre helped the young people to set up and establish Skate Aid to tackle the problem of anti social behaviour caused by the lack of facilities for young people in Hunmanby.
The group had enormous amounts of support from the local community and plans to construct their new skate park quickly developed. The commitment from the kids, local supporters and volunteers was overwhelming and plans for the new skate park quickly advanced into a feasible project that Yorventure was keen to support.
The Skate Aid members and supporters dedication to the project was regularly demonstrated through their continuous fund raising efforts and advertising initiatives which ranged from kids washing cars and putting on gigs, to elderly residents displaying posters to advertise their support for the project.
An official celebratory opening event of the new skate park was held in November 2003. The event was a great success and earmarked Skate Aids enormous achievement. Work on the project is still continuing and is planned to include a picnic area for families wishing to supervise or accompany their children using the new skate park facility.
