Holgate Windmill

Yorventure has supported the restoration of Holgate Windmill with two grants totalling £50,000, the first in 2007 for the new timber sub curb, flooring and staircase and again in 2008 for creation of toilet/washroom facilities in the Mill.

Holgate Windmill lies 3.5 miles from the Yorwaste Harewood Whin landfill site. It is a grade 2 listed building built in 1770 and is unusual insofar as it is a five sailed windmill and when it was working it was furnished with a double set of shutters and this combination has not survived on any other mill in Britain.

The Windmill is subject of a multi-phased restoration to restore to York a missing piece of history and to give the city skyline the profile of a complete and refurbished mill. The mill will be open to visitors of all ages and will be staffed by volunteer guides. The production of a range of organic, stone-ground flour is also being planned and if this is successful the services of a full time miller will be sought to work the mill and market the flour.
