Foxglove Covert Nature Reserve - £17,670
Environmental ProjectThe Nature Reserve is located 5 miles from the Scorton Landfill site. The project has seen creation of an accessible path through the reserve together with way-marking and interpretation. The Reserve is managed under a lease agreement with the Secretary of Defence of Richmondshire District Council.
A consultation by Reserve Rangers, seeking views of users of the site as to how it could be improved, identified the need for improvements to existing tracks, way-marking and interpretation.
This project has met those needs by provision of a new path and gate to link existing reserve paths to the new wetland area; 12 new way-marking posts; interpretation panels on the pathway to and around the wetland interpretation panel and reserve map identifying new areas of the Reserve. The project has lifted barriers to accessing the area and promoted a better understanding of the local environment, with the added benefit of diverting visitors from sensitive or protected areas and restricting erosion and other damage to the most vulnerable.
The site has more than 10,000 visitors each year from the local community, community groups, school and college students and Reserve volunteers.
