Acomb Wood

Environmental Project

A £15,000 Yorventure grant funded the purchase of a privately owned wood in Acomb, near York, located within 5 miles of the Yorwaste landfill site at Harewood Whin.

The wood was purchased by the City of York Council to allow members of the general public to have access. The wood was previously privately owned and public access was prohibited. Local residents were keen to gain access to the woodland as it would provide a popular amenity to the area.

The Yorventure grant paid for the purchase of the wood in September 2003, allowing environmental improvements to be carried out including the provision of new footpaths and foot bridges, the installation of bird and bat boxes, the creation of a meadow area and a new entrance way into the woodland. The wood was also cleared of all overgrown trees and bramble to provide improved access for all people wishing to make use of the area.

Acomb Wood is now managed by City of York Council and enjoyed by many local residents and visitors.
